Betsey Johnson

Betsey Johnson is fashion designer who developed he edgy style during the punk era of the late 1970s. Betsey Johnson was born on August 10, 1942 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. As a child Betsey enjoyed drawing and dance. She loved to creat costumes for her dance recitals and spent many afternoons sketching costume ideas.
After graduating high school in 1960, Betsey decided to pursue her intersests in art and design at the Pratt institute in Brooklyn. After a year at Pratt, Betsey transferred to Syracuse University. Bestey graduated as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society in 1964.
Soon after graduating from college, Betsey won the Mademoiselle magazin's guest editor Contest. In 1965, Betsey landed a job as a fashion designer at Paraphernalia, a New York clothing boutique. While working at Parapharnalia, Betsey developed her hippie-inspired style, using fabrics such as shower curtains, the interior lining of automobiles and the wool of old New York Yankees uniforms. Betseys is know for her bright, neon dyes, puffed sleeves, deep necklines, and low waists. In 1970, Betsey left Paraphernalia to talk creative control of Alley Cat, a sportswear brand. In 1971, Besey won the Prestigious Coty Fashion Critics Award, she was the youngest designer ever to receive the honor at only age 29.
In 1978, the punk movement was a hit, Betsey partnered with ex-model Chantal Bacon to start their own company, the Betsey Johnson label. In Manhattan's fashionable SoHo neighborhood, Betsey and Chantal opened their first retail store. The Betsey Johnson label has grown large in size and reputation. The company has 65 stors all across the globe.
